Description

18th Century Follower of Frans Hals

Portrait of a man, seated and wearing a hat

oil on canvas

canvas: 30 ⅛ by 24 in.; 76.5 by 61 cm.

framed: 38 ¼ by 32 in.; 97.2 by 81.3 cm.

This composition follows Frans Hals' Portrait of a man sitting, wearing a floppy hat, a mature work of circa 1660 in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel.1  The present example preserves the loose and somewhat sketchy technique of the original, which was acquired by Wilhelm VIII in 1755. The popularity of this composition among artists endured from at least the 18th century until the 20th century, with the German artist Lovis Corinth inspired to paint his own copy in 1907.2
